As Africa tops the agenda in the wake of Bob Geldorf and the G8 meeting in Gleneagles, Stephen Sackur is in Kenya to talk to Michael Meegan of the International Community for the Relief of Starvation and Suffering. Stephen Sackur talks to Michael Meegan, about his view that debt relief and more aid are not the answer to the complex issue of lifting people out of poverty.

HARDtalk with Michael Meegan was shown on BBC News 24 and BBC World on Juli 21.
ICROSS would like to thank the public for all the positive responses we have had as a result of the BBC Interview

With funding from the Global Fund, ICROSS has successfully implemented home based care activities in Nakuru and Bondo. The funding has been extended, and ICROSS will in July move into Kisii district, open a new office and establish a home based programme based on our previous experiences. Aside from care of terminally ill AIDS patients, the programme includes HIV/AIDS prevention strategies such as the training of teachers on HIV, stigma and discrimination. June and July will see the implementation of community outreach activities such as theatre shows and the showing of video tapes.

ICROSS is pleased to announce that we had two proposals accepted in Global Fund Round Five and have secured funding on Youth Pro-care and Malaria treatment and prevention strategies from 2006-2010 in Bondo, Nakuru and Kisii districts of Kenya.

The first stage of the project was the mobilisation of the communities, meeting community elders, chiefs and other leaders to discuss the project; expectations and goals. The project will run over two years and is funded by Development Corporation Ireland. The project will cover five of the most deprived locations in Samburu, construct and repair classrooms, protect water sources, construct pit latrines, supply schools with water tanks, train 250 community health volunteers and 90 birth attendants. The project will be co-implemented with the Ministry of Health and Samburu district medical hospital.
