02/04/2010 - Icross Kenya - 2010 Malaria campaign.

There are over 300 million serious cases of malaria each year with over a million deaths.  Over 90% of deaths are in Africa, mostly children.

Malaria causes untold suffering and is Africa's leading cause of under-five deaths. 3,000 children under the age of five die each day from malaria in Africa. Malaria accounts for 40% of public health expenditure, 30-50% of inpatient admissions, and up to 50% of outpatient visits in areas with high malaria transmission.

For almost 30 years ICROSS has worked with local communities fighting Malaria. This month the rain have come and we are launching an Malaria campaign to reduce cases of Malaria. With your help we want to distribute bed nets throughout malaria areas and launch a school and village based malaria prevention programme.

Today Good Friday , Saruni OleLengeny spoke with community health workers launching this years Malaria programme. Together with ICROSS medical teams and Maasai community groups.

We will continue to reduce cases of Malaria in rural communities, we have made great progress since our first Malaria campaign in 1983. This year we are working with a growing number of trained health workers, mothers and children as we extend prevention and reduce mosquito breeding areas.

Welcome, thank you for coming to our web site.

ICROSS began its activities in 1978. We aim at providing long-term assistance to the nomadic communities of the sub-Saharan region. We act as a catalyst and all our projects are run and owned by the communities we serve. We work to improve health and living standards using their own culture. We work within a five-year strategic plan. This was developed with the Ministry of Health in Kenya and sets out long term goals.

Remember, you have the power to change tomorrow.
